Trunk road improvements to the A90 near Brechin and Forfar set to begin in January

Details regarding dates, timings and traffic management will be issued in January 2024.

TRUNK ROAD IMPROVEMENTS TO THE A90 NEAR BRECHIN AND FORFAR SET TO BEGIN IN JANUARY

Amey is set to deliver a range of improvements to the A90 trunk road network near Brechin and Forfar in January for the benefit of commuters and local communities.

The work, which Amey is undertaking on behalf of Transport Scotland, will see a £270,000 investment to deliver carriageway improvements to more than four miles of the A90 near Brechin, addressing community concerns around this section of road.

A further investment of £210,000 will also be undertaken as part of a scheme delivering 3500m of street lighting cabling and 60 new lighting columns on the A90 to the south of Forfar, enhancing road safety through improving vehicular visibility and reducing the risk of accidents.

The work is being carried out simultaneously in order to avoid long term disruption on the road network for local communities, businesses and the travelling public.

Both of these essential works have been scheduled for January to take advantage of reduced business and service traffic traditionally on the road network at this time of year, as well as a quieter events calendar after the busy festive season.

The carriageway improvements at Brechin are on a section of road which has been the subject of repeated requests from the local community and road users for repair work to be undertaken. Defects on the road surface were further exacerbated by the unprecedented impact of Storm Babet.

An earlier work date in December was postponed following engagement with key stakeholders, including the local community, where feedback was provided that repair work on this section of road should still be a priority.

This work at Brechin has now been rescheduled at the earliest possible opportunity.

Work to remove the contraflow and reopen all lanes on the A90 at Finavon Bridge between Forfar and Brechin has now commenced following the successful completion of extensive and complex repair work.

The full reopening of both carriageways northbound and southbound is scheduled for completion on the morning of Saturday 23rd December.

Amey would like to assure the public that every consideration has been given to the schemes at Brechin and Forfar in order to minimise impact on road users.

As part of the preparation for the work at Brechin and Forfar, traffic impact assessments have been undertaken which indicate there should not be a significant impact on journey times to road users passing through each of the work areas, although this will continue to be monitored.

Engagement is currently taking place with stakeholders and local communities around Brechin and Forfar. Once this is completed, further information regarding exact dates, timings and traffic management will be issued in early January 2024.

Brechin carriageway improvements

The £270,000 project will address defects on 6.5km of the northbound A90 Brechin bypass. It is anticipated that the essential maintenance will be carried out using a contraflow system from Thursday 11th January 2024 to Tuesday 30th January 2024.

Forfar Street Lighting Maintenance Scheme

The £210,00 project will deliver improved street lighting on the A90 to the south of Forfar, at Muiryfaulds between Gallowfauld and Gateside. It is anticipated the essential maintenance will be carried out under 24 hour lane closures, alternating between fast and slow lanes, with signed diversions in place, from Sunday 14th January to Friday 16th February 2024.

Please note, all schemes are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable.
