STRUCTURAL INVESTIGATIONS CONTINUE AT CLOSED SECTION OF THE A90 BETWEEN FORFAR AND BRECHIN

Structural investigation work is continuing at the closed section of the A90 near Finavon between Forfar and Brechin throughout today, Monday 23rd October.

The A90 reopened in both directions between Dundee and Forfar and between Stonehaven and Brechin in time for peak travel on Monday morning.

The carriageway remains closed in both directions between Forfar and Brechin due to high water levels.

Full investigations at two high risk structures near Finavon have yet to be completed as the water level and flow rate at this location are too severe to allow such work to take place.

Amey engineers were again on site at first light this morning to further evaluate the water conditions and assess what next steps could be taken.

Although speed and water levels are beginning to drop they are yet to reach a level that would allow divers to undertake a full investigation in a safe manner.

The water conditions will be closely monitored throughout the day and full structural investigations will be undertaken when it is safe to do so.

Amey appreciates that the closure of this section of such an important trunk road can be frustrating and would like to reassure the local community and travelling public that they are doing everything possible to reopen the route as quickly and safely as possible.

The travelling public are asked to please plan ahead when considering their journey. There is no signed diversion route in place between Forfar and Brechin due to the ongoing pressures on the road network in the area caused by the impact of Storm Babet.

Operating Company Representative for the North East NMC, Tom Wallace, said; “Our engineers were on site at first light this morning and are doing everything they can to complete structural inspections at Finavon as quickly as possible.

“The impact of Storm Babet was so severe that, although the water conditions are improving, they are not yet at a level that would allow us to complete full investigations. Any inspections must be carried out in a safe environment that does not put our teams at risk.

“We remain hopeful that we will be able to carry out further work later today and will maintain a constant vigil to react when water levels allow us to do so.

“Our engineers have been working hard to complete structural inspections across the A90 and reopen the entire route between Dundee and Stonehaven. Please be assured we are working as quickly as possible to make that happen.

“We would again like to thank all road users and the local community for their patience in advance.”
