M90 Friarton Bridge | Inspections Update

INSPECTIONS CONTINUE ON THE M90 AT FRIARTON BRIDGE, PERTH

Following a report last week of concrete spalling from Friarton Bridge on the M90 over the River Tay at Perth, Transport Scotland’s Operating Company for the NE Unit, Amey, have been carrying out a programme of inspections to determine the extent of any issues that may require to be addressed.

Over the past weekend, a series of overnight closures have allowed inspections to be prioritised over areas that could be considered to have more frequent public access.

However, to allow further surveys to be carried out safely, a contraflow system will be in place from 8-30pm on Friday 26 July through until 6-30am on Saturday 10 August 2024. In advance of the works a 30mph speed restriction will also be implemented from Thursday 25 July on the approaches to the structure and across the bridge itself.

While some concrete spalling has been identified, any consideration on future repairs can only be determined once the detailed assessment activities are completed. The bridge remains safe for traffic using the M90.

An Amey spokesperson said, “The inspection work being carried out at Friarton Bridge is necessary and part of our commitment to ensure that we have a well maintained, reliable and safe trunk road network.

“The traffic management is essential to keep everyone safe during this work, and this may lead to some potential delays to journey times.

“We encourage all road users to follow any advance warning signs and traffic management which is in place for their safety as well as that of our teams.

“We thank road users and the local community for their patience while we carry out these inspections and encourage them to plan their journeys in advance by checking the Traffic Scotland website and allowing some extra time to reach their destination.”

Amey will continue to provide further updates about any potential disruption to road users and the general public as a result of the investigations being carried out on the M90 at Friarton Bridge.

From 8.30pm on Friday 26th July until 8.30pm on Monday 29th July, the southbound carriageway of the M90 at Friarton Bridge will be closed with traffic diverted to the northbound carriageway via a contraflow system.

At this time, the A90 southbound off slip is closed and there will be no access onto the M90 southbound onslip from Barnhill Interchange with traffic being diverted north on the A90 to Kinfauns junction before rejoining the A90 southbound and back onto the M90 Southbound.

From 8.30pm on Tuesday 30th July until 8.30pm on Friday 2nd August, the northbound carriageway of the M90 at Friarton Bridge will be closed with traffic diverted to the southbound carriageway via a contraflow system.

At this time, there will be no access onto the M90 northbound offslip at Barnhill Interchange with traffic being diverted north on the A90 to Kinfauns junction before rejoining the A90 southbound and back onto the M90 offslip at Barnhill junction.

Please note, all works are weather dependent and may be cancelled or rescheduled if weather conditions are not favourable.
