A90 BETWEEN FORFAR AND BRECHIN NOW OPEN UNDER A CONTRAFLOW SYSTEM

The closed section of the A90, between Forfar and Brechin, has been reopened in both directions from Dundee to Stonehaven under a contraflow, by morning peak hours on Tuesday 24th October.

Due to receding water levels and flow rates, Amey engineers were yesterday (Monday 23rd October) able to complete investigation work on two high risk structures near Finavon that were severely impacted by Storm Babet.

Those investigations revealed that Storm Babet has caused considerable erosion of the bridge at Finavon, carrying the A90 over the River South Esk, and a contraflow traffic management system is required to enable safe crossing until repairs are completed by engineers.

Emergency work took place overnight to install a contraflow, that has allowed for the reopening of the A90, at the closure point on the route between Forfar and Brechin.

Amey utilised all available resources to complete barrier work, lining work and install the traffic management system, in order to ensure the road is open for use in both directions between Dundee and Stonehaven.

Operating Company Representative for the North East NMC, Tom Wallace, said: “We would like to thank the travelling public for their patience while we carried out full safety investigations on these high risk structures near Finavon. The danger posed by the speed and level of the water meant it was imperative we waited until these had sufficiently receded to ensure the safety of our workers on the site.

“Once these investigations were complete, and the results were known, we worked quickly overnight to implement a traffic management system that would get the A90 open again between Dundee and Stonehaven.

“Storm Babet has had a significant impact on the bridge at Finavon carrying the A90 over the River South Esk. In order to reopen the entirety of this route, and for the safety of the travelling public, it was essential that we install a contraflow system until repairs are completed.

“We would like to thank all road users and the local community for their patience while this work was undertaken.”
